Abstract

Shiga Naoya is one of the very influents men of letters in Taisho era of Japan. Not only making novels, Shiga Naoya also created a lot of short stories. Some of them are using anonymous characters. Therefore, the researcher is interested to identify the usage of those characters from two of his short stories whose titles are “Seigiha” and “Kinosaki Nite”. This research’s purpose is to find out how far the usage of the anonymous characters in “Seigiha” and “Kinosaki Nite” stories are narrated. In order to support this research, the researcher decided to use Gerard Gennete’s poststructuralist narratology theory in the analysis. The theory focuses on the connection between text and narrative which is to learn about the connection between narrative and repetition events, narrating and narrative, and narrating and story. Gerard Gennete divided narrative discourse into five level definitions of narrative, they are order, duration, frequency, mood, and voice.
