Abstract
This study examines whether writers from shared cultural background in different levels of proficiency display different writing patterns in producing L2 composition. The study investigated the students’ rhetorical pattern before and after taking an argumentative writing course by using qualitative method. It is aimed to understand how students develop their rhetorical pattern in a composition. 60 participants of second and fourth semester in higher education were selected. The students’ essays were analyzed by using rhetorical elements of argumentative wiriting; Background Information (BI), Reservation (RE) or Hesitation (HS), Thesis Statement (TS), Rational (RA) or Affective Appeals (AA) and Conclusion (CC). The results revealed that Indonesian students in higher proficiency (fourth semester) used almost linear pattern (28 students) after taking argumentative course, while the students in lower profeciency (second semester) used many non-linear pattern (14 patterns) which produced by 19 students. Fourth semester students arranged the rhetorical elements in linear pattern without overlapping and mentioning any non-linear parts in paragraph level. It is showed that the argumentative course can help them to understand how to arrange their rhetoric become linear style, since its function is to make the composition effective and easy to understand. Results of students’ rhetorical pattern indicated that the Indonesian students are able to arrange their ideas in linear style when they already learn about the genre of writing itself.
