Abstract
Rational use of antibiotics can prevent microbial resistance. During the COVID-19 pandemic, self-medication with antibiotics to prevent and treat COVID-19 is widespread among the society in various countries which contradicts the rational use of antibiotics. This study was aimed to determine the level of knowledge, attitude, and practice of antibiotic use among university students in Surabaya during the COVID-19 pandemic. This research was a cross-sectional study with accidental sampling technique. Inclusion criteria were undergraduate and associate degree students from universities in Surabaya who were 18 years of age or older. The data were analysed descriptively by counting frequency and percentage while inferential analysis was conducted using Spearman rank. A total of 149 respondents participated in this study. The results showed that only 20.1% (n=30) of respondents had good knowledge and 51.7% (n=77) had good attitude. Then, of the 90 respondents who were/had used antibiotics during pandemic, 63.3% (n=57) had good practice. However, it was found that 55,6% (n=50) of respondents had self-medicated with antibiotics when they experienced COVID-19 symptoms and 56.8% (n=51) had used antibiotics to prevent COVID-19. The correlation analysis showed that there was a significant relationship between knowledge and attitude (p=0.000; r=0.610), attitude and practice (p=0.000; r=0.755), and knowledge and practice (p=0.000; r=0.526). These findings highlight the need for rational use of antibiotic education with various method to not only increase knowledge but also attitude to be able to practice rational antibiotic use and prevent antibiotic resistance during the COVID-19 pandemic.
