Abstract

Unused and expired medicines that are disposed inappropriately potentially cause big problems, including harm in human and animal, and also polluted water and soil, that might bring negative effects on organisms in the environments. This study was aimed to determine knowledge, attitudes, and practices of society in Surabaya related to drug waste disposal and to determine the relationship between these variables. This was a descriptive, correlational, and quantitative research with a cross-sectional approach. This research was conducted from April to July 2022 with respondents were citizen of Surabaya, aged 18 years and over and having experience disposing of drug waste in the last three months. Data was collected using a questionnaire that had been validated and compiled based on the relevant literatures. The total respondents who participated in this study were 170 respondents. The results showed that most of the respondents had a fairly good knowledge (86.5%), had a good attitude (94.1%), and carried out a fairly good practice (92.4%) towards the disposal of drug waste. Correlation analysis showed a significant correlation between the knowledge and attitude (p=0,001; r=0,244), attitude and practice (p=0,000; r=0,351), and knowledge and practice (p=0,037; r=0,160) of respondents in disposing of drug waste. Even though the majority of respondents had sufficient knowledge and practice, and have a good attitude regarding drug waste disposal, education about this must still be carried out by both the government and health workers. Community pharmacists can also set up a program or facility to collect expired and unused medicines from homes.
