Abstract

Breakfast on Pluto is an Ireland film which tells about the story of male-to-female transgender named Patrick „Kitten‟ Braden searching for love and her biological mother in small town of Tyrellin, Ireland and moving to London in 1970‟s. This film explores the performance of a man who performs his opposite gender. This study aims to examine how Patrick‟s gender performativity is represented and how is the society reaction toward Patrick‟s gender performativity. The writer proposed queer theory especially gender performativity by Judith Butler as the framework of the study. This is a qualitative research and this study is done by analyzing selected scenes which focus on Patrick‟s gender performances. The analysis does not only cover about narrative aspect, but also non-narrative aspects such as costume, make-up, performance and color. This study has resulted two findings. First, cross-dressing, repetition, and femininity are major themes in gender performativity that is shown in Patrick, a character in Breakfast on Pluto. Second, it represents the discrimination, harassment, and violence of heteronormative society toward male-to-female transgender in Irish society.
