Abstract

Translating an idiom is not an easy task because the meaning of the idiom cannot be directly translated from each word that constructs them. A translator needs translation strategies to produce an appropriate and suitable translation in the target language. The data were taken from a movie entitled Ralph Breaks the Internet: Wreck-it Ralph. There are 30 idioms found and were analyzed qualitatively to determine the types of idioms by using Fernando's idiom classification theory and translation strategies applied in a movie by applying Baker's idiom translation strategies. Based on the analysis conducted, all types of idioms present which are pure idiom (56.7%), semi-idiom (30%), and literal idiom (13.3%). The result also shows that all the idiom translation strategies were applied. The first strategy is a translation by using idiom with similar meaning and form that applied two times. The second is a translation by using an idiom with a similar meaning but a different form that is applied two times. The third strategy is a translation by paraphrase, which is applied 23 times. The last strategy is a translation by omission that is applied three times. The study revealed that a translation by paraphrase strategy is the most dominant strategy used. The target viewer of the movie is one of the factors that determine the translation strategy chosen by the translator. This study also reveals that the context and situation, in which idioms appear, are important factors in determining the meaning of idioms.
