Abstract

The nature of hegemonic masculinity is identical to the domination over their own gender, men. But many forget the fact that hegemonic masculinity acts are not always negative. This study aims to examine the hegemonic masculinity traits found in male characters aimed at men in the film The Gentlemen (2020) by Guy Ritchie. The method of this study is qualitative method and uses narrative non-narrative approach to support arguments. This study uses gender relations theory conducted by R.W Connell to analyze behavior and action conducted by chosen male characters in The Gentlemen (2020) film. This study also uses R.W Connell's relations among masculinity which consists of four types of masculinity, namely hegemonic masculinity, marginalized masculinity, complicit masculinity, and subordinate masculinity to facilitate the categorization of masculinity in each male character and to describe the nature of hegemonic masculinity. This research’s findings are hegemonic masculinity traits throughout the films is presented by the use of dark shade of outfit, smoking behaviour, homophobic, and the act of dominance towards fellow gender through their actions and words. In addition, there are indeed differences on hegemonic masculinity traits conducted by Chinese-American Masculinity, American Masculinity, and British Masculinity. The differences are found in their reason and how they carrying out the acts of dominating. As a means of gaining power and authority, Chinese-American masculinity engages in hegemonic behavior by the use of backstabbing act, while western masculinity engages in hegemonic behavior as a means of countering it by confronting them one by one. On the other hand, British Masculinity tend to avoid any type of problems by dealing it fairly.
