Abstract

This study aims to analyze the behavior of Ian and Barley Lightfoot on Onward (2020) that shows the opposite of toxic masculinity. The issue is interesting to analyze because the two characters managed to break the concept of masculinity. This film shows that it is okay for young men in particular, to express their emotions. In contrast to how society operates today, it established a concept of masculinity that may be harmful to both males and females. Getting emotional especially when a guy is showing weakness and sadness, asking for help, and showing fear is not a problem. The concept of toxic masculinity, which limits males to a state of emotional suppression, should be abandoned as soon as possible. The study is designed as a qualitative study with a narrative and non-narrative approach. The study uses toxic masculinity theory by Terry A. Kupers to analyze the behavior of Ian and Barley which shows the opposite of the concept of toxic masculinity. The study finds out that Ian and Barley’s behavior has succeeded in breaking the concept of toxic masculinity. In the concept of toxic masculinity, one aspect is emotional suppression. Then the writer found that the behavior of these two characters showed their emotions such as crying, disappointed, sad in relief without fear of being ridiculed not as real men. They also show each other weaknesses and need help when doing missions together which shows that men too can ask for help and do not have to be tough on their own.
