Abstract

The high use of antibiotics in infectious therapy will increase the risk of inappropriate use of antibiotics which lead to resistance that can cause global problems. The Ministry of Health’s KPRA made policy on antimicrobial resistance control program by evaluating the use of antibiotics by quantitative and qualitative methods. Therefore, research is needed to determine the pattern of antibiotic use and qualitative evaluation with the Gyssens method in orthopedic surgery patients by describing the completeness of the data, indications, effectiveness of antibiotics, duration of antibiotic use, correct dose, interval, route, and timing of antibiotics. This was a retrospective observational study in orthopedic patients at Airlangga University Hospital Surabaya from January 2020 until January 2022. The results showed that 44 orthopedic patients received antibiotics. 33 patients got antibiotic prophylaxis and 35 patients got antibiotic empiric therapy. The most commonly used antibiotic in single prophylactic antibiotics in orthopedic patients is Cefazolin 2 g IV amounted to 48%. With the use of single empirical therapy, the most commonly used is Cefazolin (3x1g) IV. The results of the qualitative analysis with the Gyssens method showed that 13% in category V, 20% in category IV, 8% in category III, 2% in category I and 57% in category 0.
