Abstract

The aim of this study is to analyze how gender role portrayal is depicted by the main characters, Alina Starkov and Mal Oretsyev, in the Shadow and Bone Film (2021). Shadow and Bone (2021) is a Netflix TV series which revolved around the story of Alina Starkov, the chosen one with the power to summon light. Along her journey, she is accompanied with her love interest as well as her childhood friend, Malyen Oretsev. This thesis used qualitative method. Qualitative analysis will be done by identifying the traditional gender role present on the movie and analyze how each character perform their gender by using Judith Butler’s theory of performativity (1990) and narrative as well as non-narrative method. The findings of this study is that Alina succeeds on doing gender role reversal whereas Mal follows traditional gender role. This signified the movie industry failure to fully break gender role stereotype.
