Abstract
Basil leaf extract (Ocimum basilicum L.) contains compounds that act as immunostimulants, one of which is flavonoids. Flavonoids can act as immunostimulants by increasing the activity and phagocytic capacity of macrophage cells. This study aims to determine the effectiveness of basil leaf extract (Ocimum basilicum L.) as an immunostimulant to the activity and phagocytic capacity of white mouse (Rattus norvegicus) macrophage cells. Experimental rats were divided into five groups with five replications. The K- group was given 1% CMC Na, K+ was given 1% CMC Na on the 7th and 14th day induced SRBC intramuscularly, P1 was given basil leaf extract at a dose of 150 mg/kgBW, P2 was given basil leaf extract at a dose of 300 mg. /kgBW, P3 was given basil leaf extract at a dose of 600 mg/kgBW for 21 days. Examination of the activity and phagocytic capacity of macrophage cells was carried out by making smear preparations from challenged peritoneal fluid macrophages and E. coli bacteria observed under a microscope with 1000x magnification. The percentage value of phagocytic activity is the percentage of macrophage cells that are actively carrying out the phagocytosis process among all macrophage cells. The phagocytic capacity of macrophages was determined based on the number of E. coli bacteria phagocytosed by active macrophage cells. Statistical analysis in this study used One-Way ANOVA and Tuckey's test. The results showed that the control group and the treatment group had significantly different phagocytic activity and capacity of macrophage cells (p<0.05). Basil leaf extract (Ocimum basilicum L.) at P3 with a dose of 600 mg/kgBW is an effective dose in increasing body resistance by increasing the activity and capacity of white mouse (Rattus norvegicus) macrophage cells.
