Abstract
Background : One alternative for the treatment of extensive bone defects is the use of
bone graft. Autogenous bone remains the established standard bone grafting material.
However, the availability of bone for harvest is limited. Demineralized bone matrix was
ideally used as bone graft substitute because it has osteoinductive and osteoconductive
mechanism. On the other hand, freeze dried allograft, which has osteoconductive
mechanism, has been widely used in clinic. The purpose of the study was to ascertain that
demineralized bone matrix (DBM) is better than Freeze dried allograft in new bone
formation through osteoinductive mechanism.
Materials and Methods : Eighteen male white rats of 60 days old and weighing about
200-300 gram received standard pellet for rodents and water ad libitum. The rats were
divided into three observation groups, each was surgically implanted with a graft in the
adductor muscle. Each group consisted six tights implanted with demineralized bone
matrix and the other side tight implanted with freeze dried allograft and sacrifieced 2nd
weeks, 4th weeks and 6th weeks after implantation (6 rats/period). Histological
examination have been performed to asses the number of osteoblast cells and bone matrix
formation. The data were tested for normality using Kolmogorov-Smimov test and the
result was analyzed with T one-sample test.
