Abstract

Learning a second language needs supports from the environment and people around the learners. In the classroom interaction, the teacher plays an important role to succeed the process of teaching and learning. This study aimed at analyzing the practice of teacher feedback provided by English teacher during classroom interaction. The participants were a teacher and 15 students in the same classroom. The data collection process was performed in SMP Al Hikmah Surabaya at Jalan Kebonsari LVK II Surabaya. There were four ways to collect the data: observation, audio-recording, interview and open- questionnaire. The result showed that the teacher tended to provide feedback on content instead of feedback on form. The most frequent variety of feedback on content used was repeating, and then followed by acknowledging a correct answer, indicating an incorrect answer, criticizing, expanding or modifying a student's answer and praising. Meanwhile, the teacher provided feedback on form to correct an error in vocabulary, grammar and pronunciation. According to the teacher, feedback was provided naturally following the situation of the class. Whereas, almost all students thought that teacher feedback was important to increase their motivation and notice their error answer.
