Abstract

Muktiono, Dadung Ibnu. Viewers’ Consumerism in Perceiving Pond’s Ad in Kawanku Magazine. A thesis submitted as partial fulfillment of the requirements for the Sarjana Degree of the English Department Faculty of Humanities Airlangga University Surabaya. This study concerns with the consumerism on skin lightening products among female teenagers, especially on Pond’s products. Furthermore, the writer also concerns with the factors cause consumerism, and the effect. This study also aims to reveal the influence of the skin lightening products advertisement on female teenagers in choosing the products, especially in Kawanku magazine, a magazine for female teenagers. In the process of data collection, the writer used questionnaires to find out the characteristics of consumerism among female teenagers. To complete the data, the writer also conducted focus group discussion with the respondents. After analyzing the data, it is found that consumerism happens among female teenagers and skin lightening products affect them very much, physically and psychologically. The advertisement also has big roles in determining female teenagers’ choice and shaping their mind about whiteness and beauty. However, it is also found that the parents also give contribution to arise consumerism among female teenagers.
