Abstract
Food is an essential part in people's lives. It is not just a means of survival but also a medium to socialize with others. How family relationship can be defined through food consumption, office tasks can be conducted by a cup of coffee, or husband-wife romance sparks in the kitchen are some examples of food roles in social activities. Therefore, this study analyzes the way food is considered as a lifestyle in audience’s life. Certainly, human eating behavior has a close relationship with mass media and food industry. Here, culinary information are presented by detikFood, the first culinary portal in Indonesia. The meaning of a message in mass media is not determined by the text itself. However, it is dependent on the audience’s readings. Stuart Hall explained the encoding and decoding process as reception analysis, a method to look at closer what is actually going on when an audience decodes a message. Hall used three scales of readings to describe it, those are dominant-hegemonic, negotiated, and oppositional. The message in this study is all information of culinary in detikFood. The audiences are five informants who give their readings for six categories of food-related lifestyle. The categories are purchasing motives, consumption situations, ways of shopping, quality aspects, cooking methods, and culinary tourism. Culinary tourism is a finding in this research and it is known that audience predominantly use online media to fulfill their food choices motives.
