Abstract

Mental retardation is one of a variety of physical and mental limitations are characterized by low intelligence with an IQ below 70. Child with mental retardation show fine cognitive development delaying. Disorder of the development that occurs unable to adapt with social life. Pretend play therapy is given to children with mental retardation to practice fine cognitive ability. This research was aimed to prove the influence of play therapy pretend play to children 's cognitive development mild mental retardation in SLB Bhakti Siwi Sleman. Design used in this research was quasy experimental pre post test design. The population was all of students with mild mental retardation In SLB Bhakti Siwi Sleman is 29 respondents. The sampling technique used was purposive sampling with 14 respondents as a sample. The independen variable was pretend play therapy and the dependent variable was cognitive development. Data were collected by using a respondent observation and analyzed using Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test and Mann Whitney test with significance level of α≤0.05. The result of Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test in control group showed p=0.317 and treatment group has significance level p =0.046. The result of Mann Whitney Test showed p=0.037, it means that the impact pretend play therapy to fine cognitive development. It can be concluded that play therapy pretend play can enhance fine cognitive development in child with mental retardation. Pretend play therapy can be used as one of the stimulus to improve cognitive development of children with mild mental retardation.
