Abstract
ABSTRACT This research studied the dynamics of election of general executive of PBNU (National executive of Nandlatul Ulama') at the period 1999-2004, namely at the time Hasyim Muzadi was chosen as general executive of PBNU period 1999-2004 in the thirtieth Muktamar (National Congress) of NU in Lirboyo, Kediri, East Java. This moment was specific and unique, and has never been studied, because the election of Hasyim Muzadi as general executive of PBNU is not mainly based on descendant of Kiai any more, but it was based more on achievement and professionalism of the candidate of general executive of PBNU. The aim of this study was analysis descriptive-qualitative knowledge about: why Hasyim Muzadi is chosen as general executive of PBNU period 1999-2004 in the thirtieth Muktamar of NU in Lirboyo, Kediri, East Java. This research is secondary data analysis research by using qualitative research method, social definition paradigm, and phenomenology approach. There are two subject of this study, that is cultural aspect of NU (typical Kiai) and structural aspect of NU (PWNU- regional executive of NU) who follow the thirtieth Muktamar of NU in Lirboyo, Kediri, East Java. They not only people who support Hasyim, but also person who contra or neutral to Hasyim, depending on their consideration. This research uses two data collection technique, namely documentation and depth interview related with necessary data. The result of research shows that there was dynamics in the election of general executive of PBNU period 1999-2004, i.e, it is not mainly based on descendant of Kiai any more, but it is based more on achievement and professionalism of the candidate of general executive of PBNU, support of typical Kiai, and open support of seven PWNU (PWNU of East Java, Bali, West Nusa Tenggara, Centre Kalimantan, West Kalimantan, North Sumatra, and Irian Jaya). Base on that conclusion, there is a future implication for NU, namely the election of general executive of PBNU should open more.
