Abstract
The problem of mothers working outside their homes is still a dilemma, for it might disturb the process of child care and education in their families. This research is carried out to find out whether there is a difference in teeth care, teeth cleansing, and caries of preschool children of working mothers and of mothers who stay at home. The research is carried out from April 2 "d to May 4 °i , 2002 in 30 Kindergartens at Taman – Sidoar o. This observational analytical comparative research used the cross sectional approach. Technique of sample collecting was the two level-technique with the cluster random sampling method. Data analysis was carded out with multiple regression test. From the analysis of working status and the social economic status of the mothers we found that there is a difference in child teeth care, PHP value, and def-t value. Child teeth care and def-t value are the best in children of mothers who stay at home, fair in children of mothers with formal jobs, and lowest in children of mothers with informal jobs. PHP value are the best in children of mothers who stay at home, fair in children of mothers with informal jobs, and lowest in children of mothers with formal jobs. Social economic factor also influences child teeth care, PHP value, and def-t value. Good social economic condition showed result in good child teeth care, PHP value, and def-t value. Based on research conclusion, we suggest that mothers who work outside their homes will arrange their time carefully in order to give better care for their children. We hope that the Community Health Center can give regular check up and treatment for children which will help to prevent dental and oral diseases in children ; and can activate dentist and assistants to give information, check-up, and treatment for preschool children. The institutions which have connection with working mothers such as the company/firm where the mother works, the Labor Union, or the Labor Department can give educational instructions about teeth care to women-employees. Midwife or Nurse Schools can develop a short curriculum on teeth care education, for midwives and nurses are the nearest to the people in the health service for the community. Besides, pregnant mothers and preschool children are parts of Mother and Child Health Care in the Community Health Center. A further research is needed to find out the relationship between working mothers, the pattern of child snack and child teeth health.
