Abstract

Most of duties of administrative assistants revolve around managing and distributing information within office. Administrative assistants are also in charge of sending and receiving correspondence. As in the Administration of Cooperation Section, administrative assistants need to master correspondence skill in both Bahasa and English. From the description previous chapter, the writer got some conclusions that the technical terms of invitation letter are not as simple as usual letter, especially invitation letter for business or politic. As an administrative assistant in government office, making and accepting invitation letter is very common. The proper format is needed because most of those letters are addressed to the government officials. The next is about the translation method that is used in translating invitation letter. The writer used two methods in translating, they are adaptation which is translating the source text into the translated text and then adapting it into target language and literal or word-for-word method alike but using target language grammar. The writer also got some obstacles. Arranging the contain of the letter is not that easy because there are some rules that must be followed. For example, making the subject line, which only consists of 1-2 sentences but must contain several basic information. The writer then could solve it by listing the basic information needed and connecting them with the conjunctions. The writer also found the translation using literal method difficult because she is used to translate using free method. As long as she can maintain the meaning, the writer will not make the structure or the pattern of the translation. But while translating, the writer got help from the electronic dictionaries and internet, so she could look onto it when she found some difficult words. The technical formats of invitation letter and translating source text using literal method are new knowledge and experience for the writer that she got during her internship period. Because of this new knowledge and experience, the writer can learn that she must pay more attention to the detail of the technical format and terms of invitation letter for the business. The writer also learns not too often using free translation method when she translates some source texts, especially for formal invitation letters. Learning corresponding language in both Bahasa and English is also important for administrative assistants. Those obstacles that have been experienced by the writer prove that working on invitation letter is not that simple as it may seem.
