Abstract

This study aims to describe meaning of life satisfaction and its antecedents among lecturersof Christian private universities in Surabaya. Life satisfaction is concept that describes cognitiveevaluation of the individual about their real-life condition compare to their expectation (Diener, et.al2003). Life satisfaction of academician is interesting to become topic of this research, since lifesatisfaction of lecturers is associated with their work performance in their job field. Qualitativeresearch with interpretative phenomenological analysis used in this study to analyze the result ofthis research. Participants are three lecturers from three different Christian higher educationinstitutions at Surabaya, and the process of collecting data done through interviews, observation anddocumentation. The results showed that the lecturers have middle high level of life satisfaction duringtheir serve in the higher education institution. And the demographic antecedent’s factors of lifesatisfaction are income, health condition, and their married status. Other psychological conceptsthat related to their life satisfaction are meaning of work, religiosity, job affect and perceivedorganizational support from their institution where they work right now. Although most of these findings support those in the broader previous literatures, there are differences in the emphasis placed on some of the findings, due to the context of education in Christian Higher Education Institution. From the results, recommendations were made for University Leaders to helpacademician to optimize their life satisfaction trough opportunity to continue their study, improvetheir academic credentials, harmonize between work and non-work issues, and maintainsustainability of their institution.
