Abstract

This study aimed to describe cost of illness in type 2 diabetes mellitus patients with two oral antidiabetic drug at primary health care centre in Surabaya. The cross sectional study with purposive sampling method was conducted at 10 primary health care centre in Surabaya which had highest number of diabetes mellitus patients. This study was conducte on 105 respondents. The perspective used in this study was societal perspective. Component of cost that counted were direct medical cost consisting of drug costs, doctor consultation fees, laboratory examination fees, blood sugar test costs, and the cost of drug side effects, other than that, direct non-medical cost consisting of transportation costs and administrative costs, as well as indirect costs which was the loss of productivity cost. Cost measurement used a list of interview questioner to determine the cost of diabetes melitus patients. The largest costs incurred were the direct medical costs which was the cost of drugs is Rp 28.184.110,32 on one year. The average cost of illness in period one years was 996.088,04 ± 261.836,80 every patients. To conclude, cost in patients influenced by the amount of drugs in prescription. Because of the amount of time spent at the primary health care centre, some patients choose to buy medicines in drug store thus made the cost higher.
