Abstract
Society constructs gender to differentiate woman and man. Transgender is a term used to describe someone whose gender identity differs from the sex they were assigned at birth. However, due to heteronormative norms which categorized people into two kinds of gender, society are hard to accept the existence of transgender people. One of experiences felt by transgender people is represented in a movie entitled Saturday Church (2017). Saturday Church is one of American movie which tells story about a young boy named Ulysses who performs his opposite gender. Ulysses is struggling to find his gender identity before he became male-to-female transgender. Applying the theory of Gender Performativity by Judith Butler, this research‟s goals is to examine how gender is performed in Ulysses character in Saturday Church movie and how society treats him. This research is using qualitative study, with the pinpoint on narrative and non-narrative aspects. The analysis of this research focuses on selected scenes that showed Ulysses‟ gender performance. This study has resulted two findings. First, Ulysses, a character in Saturday Church movie, showed the act of cross-dressing, repetition, and revelation as the major themes in gender performativity. Thus, it represents that gender is fluid and dynamic, not a fixed thing. Second, although United States as the liberal country, people are not freely choose their gender preference. This study proved that gender cannot be defined by sex assigned at birth, but through something act repeatedly.
