Abstract

The aim of this study is to analyze the linguistic feature and how the register language is used by the billiard commentators of the World Cup of Pool 2017 final match. This study is a qualitative study by applying the linguistic feature theory by Holmes (2013) and the morphological theory by McCarthy (2002). The study found 80 types of vocabulary in the 211 utterances of the play-by-play commentary. Meanwhile, in the morphological context, this study found 46 types of word formation in a form of compounding noun, compounding verb and affixes. The study also found that the register in the play-by-play commentary is commonly used to effectively describe the accident or event in the billiard match. Moreover, the commentator of the match is likely targeting general public instead of specific audience so that the video of the match can be enjoyed by wider audience.
