Abstract

American movie, especially English-language movie, often uses expletive interjections. This study aims to elaborate the types and functions of expletive interjections that are used by the main male characters in “Bad Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising 2016” movie. The theories used in his study are the types of expletive interjection by Gehweiler (2008) and the functions of expletive interjections by Ljung (2011). This study uses qualitative approach. The data of this study are the dialogues spoken by two main male characters. The data were collected by browsing the movie on Google site, selecting it with several criteria, downloading then transcribing it, and identifying the dialogues of the main male characters. The data were analyzed by identifying words and phrases that contains expletive interjections, classifying the data based on the types and the functions of expletive interjections, elaborating the explanation, examining the behavior of the characters, and interpreting the results. The writer found 87 expletive interjections. In primary interjections, there are 12 moderated expletives and 7 euphemistic expletives. Meanwhile, there are 68 taboo interjections in secondary interjections. Moreover, there are three functions of expletive interjections found, which are 25 reactive exploratory interjections, 21 expletive pragmatic markers as slot fillers, and 41 expletive pragmatic markers as gap filler. The results show that taboo expletives are the most frequently used type by the main male characters because of their bad and emotional attitude.
