Abstract

This study examines how a film can construct a peoples’ mind through the representation of nationalism in Merantau film. This research aims to find out and analyze the representation of nationalism in Merantau film. A qualitative approach is used in this study as the method of the study. Then, Charles Sanders Peirce’s semiotic theory is used to analyze the data of this study. According to Pierce and Saussure the signifier or physical sign or represent a man can be words, gestures, physical objects and pictures that call attention to or signify an object, event, idea or concept or being. This study finds that nationalism foregrounded in the film is portrayed through representation of traditional cultures. The result of this study is nationalism in Merantau film, it can be seen as a tradition and culture that emphasizes the meaning of national struggle and moral value as well.
