Abstract
Throughout the centuries, black discrimination has existed as if it is part of society. Jay Coles’ Tyler Johnson Was Here portrayed the practices of black oppression as a part of American society’ everyday lives. Even though black slavery had officially abolished in 1865 on the Thirteenth Amendment of the United States Constitution by Congress, in fact, it still exists as an ordinary occasion. This study aims to reveal how Marvin constructs some patterns of internalized racism. The writer of this study use qualitative and descriptive method to examine and elaborate the study. This study will apply African American theory approach and the pattern of internalized racism by Suzanne Lipsky. However, to discover what kinds of racism practiced in the novel, two out of the six basic tenets of Critical Race Theory by Delgado and Stefancic, which are; everyday racism and social construction, also being used. The result of this study shows that Marvin was helpless in confronting the internalized racism because it has become the habit of American society.
