Abstract

The term femme fatale has been seen differently these days. It is because nowadays the female main characters show a different kind of femme fatale. They no longer do it for their own but for other people. They also need men’s help rather than making them submissive. However, this term is different from what Beauvoir’s said. She described her concept of ‘bad women’ which is characterized as women who ‘eat’ their men. It is depicted in the movie titled Red Sparrow (2018) which becomes the object of this research. The movie is about a female ballerina named Dominika. Using Simone De Beauvoir's concept of Other and the narrative and non-narrative method, the writer found that her motives, goals, and how she handles her problems represent how she is different from other femme fatale characters in previous movies before it. Rather than lying to her enemy named Nate to gain information about the mole, she chose to tell him the truth about how she becomes a Russian sparrow and how terrible her uncle, Ivan, is. In the conclusion, this movie shows that the term femme fatale is always different from time to time because in the old femme fatale movies, most of the female characters became dangerous or seductive because of money or job. But in this movie, Dominika becomes dangerous and seductive so she can help and live together with her mother. This signifies that woman cannot be underestimated anymore because woman will get stronger in each year.
