Abstract

The study aims to investigate the main implications derived from IoT technology on cost management for accounting and finance teams and focuses the attention on the decision-making processes related to energy management in food manufacturing industry. This study employs an exploratory study and it is articulated in two different steps which consists of a theoretical and a practical study using descriptive method with a case in a company. For the company case, we chose an Australia-based dairy factory where the application of an IoT-enabled sensing technology has been implemented with the aim to reduce the energy consumption in the factory. The results demonstrate that there are several significant implications of the IoT technology on energy management for achieving cost efficiency. There are also several potential involvement of the accounting and finance teams within the energy management related to the food manufacturing industry. The study outlines several issues that remain under investigated, i.e. how the accounting and finance functions in companies can utilise the IoT technology and involve in this form of digital transformation. This study represents a helpful direction for investigating the managerial solutions needed for successfully and effectively adopting IoT technology from the energy efficiency and cost efficiency perspective within the food manufacturing industry. Finally, this study analysed together topics that are often considered separately, notably the connection between energy management and cost efficiency through the adoption of IoT technology.
