Abstract

Nowadays, movies are a favorite object of society of all ages which made people come to the cinema to watch movies that were eagerly awaited by them. Not infrequently the moviemakers added flouting of Grice’s maxim in order to create a humor so that the audience can be entertained while watching a movie. The study aims to analyze the flouting of the maxim by Grice (1991) performed by the main characters of the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 movie. Later, this study reveals the implied meaning behind the flouting maxim. After analyzing the flouting maxim and revealing the meaning behind, the writer attempts to investigate how humor by Attardo (1994) was applied to the conversation. Qualitative method is used to answer the research question in this study. The 138-minute duration of the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 movie was used to answer the issue of the study. The results of this study show that the main characters of the movie have flouted the whole maxims. The writer has found flouting Maxim of Quantity occurs six times, Maxim of Quality occurs three times, Maxim of Relation occurs four times, and Maxim of Manner as much as five times of all. The offense is mostly done to make fun of his friend for a self-defense attempt where humor often arises when the players flout the Maxim of Quantity. Later, the writer found that the entire humor theory of Attardo (1994) is applied in the conversation of the main characters; Hostility Theory four times, Incongruity Theory six times, and Release Theory two times of all utterances. Humor is mostly applied through Incongruity Theory because the theory has a contradiction of context between which the audience imagined and the reality that happened.
