Abstract
Synonym in Japanese are known as ruigigo, which are several words that have similar meanings. Ruigigo can be found in verbs, adjectives, and nouns. Besides having a similar meaning, there are also differences, namely in the way of use, situation, or nuance in sentence. This study discusses the different meanings of the words kanji, kanjou, kibun, and kimochi in the Kokoro by NatsumeSoseki. The descriptive qualitative method is useful for explaining the analysis. This research uses lexical meaning theory, grammatical theory, meaning relation, and synonym or ruigigo. The results that can be found is the context of the sentence the word kanji means a vague impression when making contact with someone, then the word kanjou means the state of human emotion. The word kibun means a relatively weak emotional state that lasts for a while, indicating person’s character, and feel (atmosphere). Last, the word kimochi means the state of mind that feels the heart, where the nuances in the sentence express regret, dissatisfaction, and uneasy feeling.
