Abstract

Racial issues which opposing different classes of ethnic majorities and minorities in the United States have been depicted in many cultural expressions, one of them is through a movie. The First Purge (2018) movie portraits those issues under the concept of systemic racism which depicts the experiences of some ethnic minorities in the United States toward racial oppression. The ethnic minorities depicted in the movie are African Americans, Hispanics, and Asian Americans. Against the ideas of winning the Whites, the film shows how in the end African Americans become a hero in their struggle against the oppressors. Through the theory of Systemic Racism by Joe R. Feagin and investigation, this study aims to investigate how racism is depicted in The First Purge movie by analyzing its narrative and non-narrative aspects. The movie was analyzed using seven characteristics of Systemic Racism. The results show that Whites' economic domination is the source of racism. The findings of this study indicate that The First Purge movie depicts how the white Americans treat ethnic minorities differently, creating a racial class among these minorities as well as shows the struggle of the minorities
