Abstract

This study is about the phonological alternations and process occurred in a five-year-old autistic child utterances. The writer took the data from an autistic child aged five years old. In this study, the writer used Giegerich’s phonological alternation theory and Ingram's phonological processes theory. This study used case study because the writer focused on one participant. The data were obtained by recording the conversation between the participant and the therapist with video recording. Based on the data analysis, the writer found that not all types of phonological alternation and processes occur in five-year-old autistic child utterances. There are only eight out of fourteen types of process occurred. In addition, the writer also finds another process that is not included either in Ingram’s or Giegerich’s, they are substitution of vowels and substitution of retroflex and vowels.
