Abstract

This study attempts to discuss the issue raised in drama Mulatto written by Langston Hughes. The drama presents the issue of African-American identity especially of the main characters, Cora and Robert, as African-Americans who live in the white world. Since they are included as the minority people in America, they had to experience racial discrimination in most of their life. By raising the issue above, this study aims to present the construction of African-American identity which is being caught between two cultures: Blacks and Whites. In analyzing the issue of African-American identity, the writer uses qualitative method by elaborating act, dialogue, plot and conflict in the drama and applies the concept which is suitable to the discussion. Therefore, the concept of double consciousness and Racial Discrimination mainly suggested by W.E.B. Du Bois and Vincent N. Parillo are applied in the analysis. By applying the concept, it is found that Cora and Robert have “double” identity and Black Vernacular as the result of racial discrimination by the white Americans. The discrimination practices towards the African-Americans in Mulatto appear in five levels of intensity and they are mainly emphasized through some treats prevailed in the community daily life.
