Abstract

This study aims to show the factors that encourage Pesantren to maintain Krama and Krama Inggil levels of Javanese and identify what the strategies used by Pesantren and also domains in Pesantren which has an opportunity to maintain the Krama and Krama Inggil levels of Javanese. This study uses theory of language maintenance proposed by McConvell (1986, cited in Thieberge,1988), Thieberger (1988), and Hardy (2009). The data collected were based on interviews from participants of Pesantren; As-syafi’iyah Tanggulangin Sidoarjo East Java, they are: Kyai, Ustadz and santri. And it was taken from observation of daily activities especially the interaction between them. This study concludes several main findings. First, there are many threads that influence Pesantren to encourage the santri to maintain the appropriate speech levels use of Javanese language. They are a) ideology of pesantren, b) diversity of santri, c) policy of pesantren, d) santri perception and e) high frequency of interaction. Second, the strategies were used by pesantren are a) santri are ordered to use appropriate Krama and Krama Inggil levels of Javanese, b) the ustadz uses Krama level to santri, c) The older santri reminds the younger santri, d) The ustadz uses Krama to give announcements, e) The ustadz positioned the santri to accept the guest and Ustadz orders santri to translate Islamic book. Third, the domains in which the speech levels occurs are almost all situation in the pesantren, such as during in the information center, during in the class, during meal time, etc. from the results above the researcher can conclude that the pesantren successfully preserve the continuity of the use Krama and Krama Inggil levels of Javanese.
