Abstract

Code-mixing is a very important aspect of bilingualism, and is a natural occurrence when a bilingual speaker engages in discourse. This study examined several factors that might contribute to an Indonesia-Javanese bilingual boy's code-mixing within the context of the family's language use. Zidan was recorded three sessions in eight times recording from age 3;5 to 3;6: one with her Javanesespeaking mother and father and then twice with his friends and other interlocutor. The data of this study are analyzed by using the qualitative method which more focuses on the rates of code-mixing and the factors that influenced the occurrence of code-mixing based on Bilingual First Language Acquisition (BFLA) theories. The results showed that Zidan as a bilingual child code-mixed in the term of intrautterances mixing 46 times and 40 times in inter-utterances mixing. Zidan codemixing could be accounted due to grammatical and functional properties.
