Abstract

Persekutuan Hidup Damai dan Kudus is a place for homosexual people to conduct the religious duty without discrimination among society. This study was intended to see how the sermons construct homosexuality in the Persekutuan Hidup Damai dan Kudus through the use of discourse elements. By examining the sermons, this study aimed to see how the preacher sees the issues of homosexuality in the society and religion. Source of the data was taken from sermons spoken by the preacher in the homosexual worshipping community. Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) proposed by Teun van Dijk called as socio-cognitive approach was chosen to analyze the text. The socio-cognitive approach requires three dimension, text level, socio-cognition and socio context. The level of text shows that homosexuality is not welcomed by the preacher. However, there was discourse strategy used by the preacher to accommodate homosexual people. It showed that there is negotiation process by the preacher to accept the homosexual. Socio-cognition level shows how the discourse of Christianity rejects both homosexuality and homosexual. Homosexuality never deals with God creation. Additionally, the society perceives that homosexuality is subordinate. The concept of homosexuality is always affected by the religion and morality. Therefore, homosexuality discourse is not welcomed by the value of Christianity and society.
