Abstract

This thesis is a study about orientalist constructions that are found in The Mummy movie produced by Stephen Sommers. The study specifically discusses the constructions that show about the differences portrayed between the West and the East. For this case, the East is Egyptian and the West is foreign people coming from Western countries. The writer of the thesis tries to find out the constructions by analyzing the visualizations or nonnarrative aspects and narrative aspects from the movie. To support the analysis, the writer of the thesis uses orientalism theory. It appears that orientalist constructions are reflected in the Mummy movie. This thesis attempts to express orientalist constructions in the hope that this will throw light on some of moviegoers perceptions that in the cinema productions especially The Mummy movie the West is always portrayed better rather than the East.
