Abstract
Beyond the conscience as human being, sometimes humans forget what actually the definition of human is. They often take for granted the status as 'human' without realizing what makes them human. Therefore, we need to examine on the notion “humanity” as the most important value for human. As one of the study that based its subject on humanity issue, this study aims to analyze the relationship between “humanity” and the concept of being human in the novel entitled Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? by Philip K. Dick. This study also attempts to analyze the unstable meaning between the notions humanity and inhumanity that are portrayed by human and android characters throughout the novel. The plot of the novel covers on Rick Deckard’s journey as a bounty hunter in order to kill six Nexus-6 androids that escape from Mars. The deconstruction theory by Jacques Derrida is applied to support the main argument that there is a contradiction of the main binary opposition between humanity and inhumanity which are portrayed by human and android characters. The result of this study reveals that there is a reversal of value between human and androids characters in the novel. The conclusion also comes with the idea that it is inappropriate to judge humanity and inhumanity based on the physical or biological appearance. Behavior and moral value would be likely the most reliable point to be considered when we judge someone’s humanity. Through the process of deconstruction, it is also revealed that the ideology of the text is posthumanism, where humans are not better than machines, but they become the part of the technological world.
