Abstract
Since anonymous application has been created and developed since the growth of the social media itself such as Whisper. The most significant thing that makes this platform different from the other social media is whisper claimed that the user’s privacy will keep secret with no profile identity, followers or friends showed. Since the anonymity covered up people’s identity, there are so many negative impacts of social media in life and the danger is the threats that exist in social media’s environment such as sexual self-disclosure. Mostly, people who likes to do sexual self-disclosure because they don’t want to be perceived adversely by the others, they will typically conceal their genuine identity, especially in Indonesia which sexual topic is taboo to be discussed publicly. This study tried to analyze and elaborate the virtual identity construction as the effect of sexual self-disclosure in whisper, and also the motive of sexual self-disclosure on Whisper. The researcher using the main theory is virtual identity by Sherry Turkle and general self-disclosure by Altman and Taylor. This study using a virtual ethnography approach and qualitative as the methods. The data collecting technique by observations and interviews documentation from 5 informant. The result of this study shows that anonymity has a big influence in sexual self-disclosure because of the openness and honesty that occurred. The function of self-disclosure that occurs in Whisper has a function as a form of self-expression and how people perceived themselves as anonymous.
