Abstract

This study aims to explore the Coming Out process of Juliana before identify herself as a non-binary individual named Ash. In addition, this study also strives to reveal the negotiations that must be carried out by Juliana as a non-binary youth when live in a heteronormative society during the Coming Out process. 'They/Them' (2020) is a short movie from New Zealand which tells the story of a teenager named Juliana who experiences a gender identity crisis. She must go through a Coming Out process to be able to identify her gender identity as non-binary in a heteronormative society. This research uses a qualitative method by using a narrative and non-narrative approach. Furthermore, the theory of the Coming Out Process explained by Eli Coleman in order to analyze Juliana's performativity during the Coming Out process before referring herself into 'Ash'. The writer found that as a non-binary youth, Juliana needs to do some negotiations with her environment, especially her school during the Coming Out process, such as: wearing the uniform of girls, coming to the women's toilet, and still using her feminine identity, namely Juliana. In conclusion, gender discrimination is still occur, especially among youth in the process of coming out. This continues to happen even in countries that have legitimized gender 'X' such as New Zealand. Therefore, Social Media is a positive space for gender minority people to do self-narrative, one of which is the short movie 'They/Them' (2020).
