Abstract

Extralinguistic Culture-bound References (ECRs) are expression that refers to entities outside language. Translating ECRs can be a challenge for translators since these terms have specific meanings and require encyclopedic knowledge of the audiences. Hence, this study investigated the categories of the ECRs, the strategies applied in translating ECRs, and determined the ideology of translation in translating the ECRs in a movie entitled Eat, Pray, Love. In analyzing the data, the writer classified the ECRs found based on Newmark’s cultural categories. After getting the classification, the writer analyzed thestrategies in translating ECRs in the subtitles based on Pedersen’s strategies. Then, Venuti’s concept of foreignization/domestication is applied in determining the ideology of translation in translating the ECRs in this movie. The findings show that material culture is the mostly appeared cultural category in this movie. In case of translation strategies, the most frequently strategy used by the translator is retention, followed by direct translation,substitution, generalization, specification, and omission. It isalso concluded that the ideology of translation in this movie is foreignization. Furthermore, several factors influence the way in rendering the ECRs, such as the different of language and culture between SL and TL, limitation in space and time of the subtitles and the visualization of the ECR presented in the scene.
