Abstract
There are many language phenomena in movies, one of which is the language features used by the characters in the movie. This research aims to find out women’s linguistic features in a Disney superhero movie called Black Widow (2021) uttered by the main character named Natasha Romanoff. This study specifically used the theory of features of women’s language proposed by Coates (2013) as the main theory to analyze the data. This study also added the exploration of functions of speech by Holmes (2017) in the use of women’s linguistic features. The research was conducted through a qualitative method. There were 153 utterances that contained features of women’s language found in the movie. Furthermore, this study found that all of women’s linguistic features by Coates (2013) can be found in the data. There are 77 utterances of Questions, 44 utterances of Commands and Directives, 11 utterances of Hedges, 9 utterances of Minimal Responses, 8 utterances of Swearing and Taboo Language, 6 utterances of Compliments, and 4 utterances of Tag Questions. In addition to that, there are four language functions which are expressive function, directive function, referential function, and phatic function can be found in the data in which expressive function and directive function are the two most used functions. The findings further indicate that women may use language features which actually exert power and confidence rather than showing tentativeness and lack of confidence.
