Abstract
Situational comedy (sitcom) is a TV series which shows daily conversation of its character and stories raised from problems that generally occur in society. In this TV series, the phenomenon of gossip generally emerges from every woman's conversation. This study aims to investigate the types of gossip and identify the collaborative style of the gossip performed by the five female characters in the sitcom entitled Grown-ish season two. The theory proposed by Jones (1980) was used to investigate types of gossip, while Coates’ (2013) theory was to identify the collaborative style. The data were collected from the conversation of five female characters in the Grown-ish and analyzed with qualitative approach. Four types of gossip are found in this study: house-talk (27%), scandal (17,02%), bitching (23,40%), and chatting (38,29%). According to the data, chatting is the most dominant type of gossip because the female characters tended to do mutual self-disclosure to provide comfort and emotional needs. Meanwhile, the collaborative style found in the gossip are topic development (19 occurrences), minimal responses (65 occurrences), hedges (43 occurrences), question (52 occurrences), and turn-taking (15 occurrences). Minimal responses become the most dominant collaborative style in all types of gossip which used to show actively listening and supporting the other interlocutor of characters. The result also reveals that in Grown-ish season two, gossip is not always negative but positive for the characters. In addition, the collaborative style play an important role in showing the establishment of fluent conversation on gossip to maintain mutuality and solidarity.
