Abstract

Making of dentures to replace lost teeth is closely related to the factor of patient’s need for it. the factor of patient’s need is closely related to the factor of patient's demand for dentures. Based on some previous surveys, it is known that not all patient’s who actually require the making of dentures ask the request for it. Purpose: To know the relation between patient’s need and demand for the making of dentures in Prosthodontics Clinic Faculty of Dentistry, Airlangga University from January 2013 to July 2014, and also aimed to determine what factor patient’s consider in making dentures. Method: This study is an observational descriptive study. There were forty-four people, who met the criteria as samples. The tools in this study is a questionnaire which had been validated. The result were tabulated and tested by using Chi-Square. Results: There was a relation between patient’s need and demand for the making of dentures in Prosthodontics Clinic Faculty of Dentistry, Airlangga University though it was not significant at 90% confidence level indicated by the contingency coefficient of 0.93, p = 1.00 = 2.706. It is because patient’s need and demand for making of dentures were low. Thus, it can be said that the factors triggering the patient in making dentures were the demand of students as the operators and the presence of patient intermediaries. Conclusion: Patient still make their life necessities as priority more than demand for the making of dentures in Prosthodontics Clinic Faculty of Dentistry, Airlangga University. The need of students as the operators and the presence of intermediaries patient can be considered as influential factors in encouraging patient’s to make dentures in Prosthodontics Clinic Faculty of Dentistry, Airlangga University
