Abstract

The study examines the main character in Yasunari Kawabata’s Thousand Cranes translated by Edward G. Seidensticker. This study discusses how women characters, Chikako, Mrs. Ota, Yukiko, and Fumiko is described from Kikuji's point of view associated with Japanese traditional gender roles. Two basic questions are, first, how does Kikuji describe the image of women characters, second, how do those women, Chikako, Mrs. Ota, Yukiko, and Fumiko have some bearing on Kikuji's private life. General feminism theory deals with Japanese traditional gender roles will be used as the main theory, supported by Cherry's Womansword: What Japanese Say about Woman, especially the discussion of Japanese women image based on male's point of view and their culture influences, such as miai (marriage arrangement), tea ceremony, and ie (family) structure. This research will be a qualitative research where the data is taken from the novel Thousand Cranes (English version), library research, journals, and other resources which are appropriate in conducting the analysis. This study discovers that the way Kikuji describe the women character and the way those women appear in front of him are associated culture values in Japanese traditional gender roles. The study will start to give further analysis of the major male character, Kikuji, and then continues with his view toward four women characters, Chikako, Mrs. Ota, Yukiko, and Fumiko.
