Abstract

Comic strips as a part of comic development have been a great part of the history of modern literature. It is considered as a very versatile medium of literature, with the potent combination of words and pictures that can depict anything a cartoonist has the imagination to envision. In this thesis, the writer will try to analyze the humor resulted from the flouting of conversational maxims in Piled Higher and Deeper (PhD) comic strips by the basic principle of Pragmatics-the H.P Grice’s Cooperative Principle (CP). This study is to reveal how the flouting of the maxims produced by the utterances in PhD comic strips. This research also wants to reveal how the flouting of the maxims can create the humorous effect in PhD comic strips.
