Abstract

This study investigates the sarcastic utterances which are delivered as implicature, spoken by the main characters in Brooklyn Nine-Nine sitcom. The sarcastic utterances are taken from four episodes of the second season aired in 2014, which are episode 4, 16, 18, and 19. This study is based on the application of the theory of Cooperative Principle developed by Grice (1975, 1989), and Camp (2012) types of sarcasm. The result shows that all maxims are flouted in the sitcom, in which maxim of quality 51.6%, manner 19.3%, quantity 12.9%, relation 12.9%, and quality and relation 3.2%. The result also shows that three out of four sarcasm types occurred, which are illocutionary (48.3%), propositional (38.7%), and lexical sarcasm (12.9%). The study concludes that the sarcastic utterances in Brooklyn Nine-Nine sitcom are produced in order to express contempt for other characters’ behavior. The sarcastic utterances are also found to be not eliciting anger because all of the main characters are portrayed as close friends or colleague.
