Abstract

Catford (1965) defines translation as an operation performed on languages, a process of substituting a text in one language for a text in another. The accuracy of transferring message is an important part in translation, especially in the business field where a slight mistake could be dangerous. Accuracy is one of the factors which determine the quality of translation. The writer then found out that the company has been using the service of Google Translate without the proper editing by the staff in the process of creating the translations, therefore endangering the accuracy of the translation itself. Based from the sentences that were translated by the staff of PT. PAL, the writer was able to find the lack of accuracy in the way that they translate the text from English to Bahasa Indonesia. The writer has been able to find many mistakes in the translation because the staff of PT. PAL uses Google Translate in creating the translations from English to Bahasa Indonesia. The use of Google Translate without proper check and editing will affect the result of the translation itself and eventually later will affect the good name of a big company like PT. PAL. Google Translate is chosen as it is faster than human minds and hands in creating the translations between two languages, or in this matter, English to Bahasa Indonesia. While Google Translate has its merit, it also has its own weakness. The weakness is that it often cannot choose the right and appropriate words that best suited for the context of the sentence or paragraph. The writer was interested to analyze the improvement of Google Translate over the years because PT. PAL is still consistent in using Google Translate which has been proven to have weakness in choosing the right words. Moreover, the translation that Google Translate made in 2015 and 2018 was close to be called right, but it needs some additional information so that it is translated professionally and at the same time can be understood by both parties.
