Abstract
The realm of science has always developed along with the times and human’s curiosity. Humans will continue to compete for achievements, and this can be done through a scientific approach and the use of knowledge. This research aims to reveal the depiction of science and knowledge that appears in Mary Shelley's Frankensteinnovel using deconstructive criticism. The deconstructive criticism in this study was applied to examine the differance and trace in the text. The findings in this analysis have been done with the following steps. First, the researcher describes the narrative in Frankenstein. Second, the researcher identifies the binary opposition in the text. Third, the researcher shows that Mary Shelley's Frankenstein promotes one of the binary oppositions in the text. Fourth, the researcher explains the inconsistency of the text. Fifth, the researcher finds the ambivalence from the text. Sixth, the researcher finds traces of the multiplicity of meaning, namely the aporia of scientific creation narratives. Through this deconstruction reading, it was found that there are oppositions in the images of science and knowledge, being presented with the mythology, the inconsistency in the science and knowledge depiction, the ambivalence that show both science and knowledge are portrayed as something evocative as well as destructive. This study also found that there are traces of depiction between science and mythology both in the 18th century, 19th until now.
