Abstract
Gender inequality has been long embedded in a society that believes in man’s superiority. This case resulted various feminism acts. Far before feminist movement operated, women have experienced oppression in many ways. Women objectification is one of the examples of women oppression. Objectification is making person into a thing, treating as a thing, when she was actually something that is really not a thing. Women objectification portrayed in several female characters in Yaa Gyasi Homegoing novel (2016). Therefore, this study chose Homegoing, a novel written by Yaa Gyasi, to elaborate the portrayal of women objectification that occurs in some female characters: Effia Otcher, Esi Assare, and Abronoma, and how their responses toward that objectification. The study used qualitative Method and feminist literary approach for the analysis. This study also using Women Objectification theory by Martha Nussbaum (1995) with her elaboration of seven notions of objectification. The story portrayed Effia, Esi, and Abronoma who were harmed by the treatment of objectification. They have experienced through several notions of objectification. Even though all of them felt terrible toward the objectification, but each of them responded differently.. Each respond has brought different result, too. Some factors: power, history of era, and custom would affect on how the objectified characters respond and how the response’s result in the story. The study finds that however struggle women had done to get over from the oppression, the fruitfulness seems hard to be achieved due to factors that placed women as inferior to men
